Whether you’re a trophy elk hunter or a competition shooter, it’s important to make sure your firearms shoots accurately every time. The best way to do this is to take good care of your firearm and keep it clean.

Be good to your gun and it will be good to you. Regular cleaning, lubricating and rust prevention are the keys to getting many years of enjoyment out of your firearm.  Fouling from powder, metal corrosion, moisture buildup, and simple neglect are the main cause of poor firearm shooting.  But if you prepare your firearm for the field of battle, it will endure the tough, adverse field conditions you put it through.

What causes fouling from powder and metal? Powders have improved over the years but they still leave deposits on your firearm that you can't see. If it isn't cleaned regularly, the powder deposits eventually build up, affecting your shooting accuracy. This also attracts moisture, which leads to rust. Metal fouling is different. This occurs in firearms that use copper jacketed high-velocity loads, which leave tiny metal fragments in the barrel. These create rough spots which cause further fragmentation and further damage to your barrel. Simple barrel cleaning can prevent both types of fouling and takes just minutes to remove.

New guns.  Most new guns come with a grease coating to prevent corrosion. This grease can slow down the action and impede a bullet's speed. The best thing to do is to clean your gun with a degreaser immediately upon purchasing.
