The AR-15 is a magazine fed, gas operated, rotating bolt tactical rifle that was first developed in the 1950s. The gas system of the AR-15 rifle helps to redirect some of the gas from the burning gunpowder back to the rifle receiver to push back the bolt and cycle the action. A port at the far end of the barrel then channels the gas through a tube and back to the bolt. To chamber a new cartridge, the bolt pushes a round from the magazine forward and then rotates into position to lock the new round into the rifle chamber. After the round is fired, the gas system forces the bolt to rotate again to unlock, slide back into a receiver extension in the stock and allow the spent cartridge to eject and start the process over. It's this operating system that has helped give the AR-15 rifle the reputation for accuracy, reliability and manageable recoil that it is known for today.
